Nervines, or nervous system supporting herbs, are some of my favorite herbs to work with. With the daily stress, worries, and pressures of modern life, nervines are important plant allies that help calm the nerves and aid states of anxiety, tension, sleeplessness, and more. There are so many nervines to work with; these are some of my favorites and their notable actions.
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and Catnip (Nepeta cataria) soothe anxiety and agitation; relax anxiety-induced digestive tension; and help us fall asleep more easily. Catnip is excellent for those of us who are allergic to or don't like Chamomile.
Heart-centered Linden (Tilia spp.) helps smooth out feelings of anxiety and irritation; nourishes fried nerves; and offers a feeling of safety, allowing us to relax and open up.
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) relaxes anxiety and stress-induced headaches; moves and helps us release stuck emotions; and boosts the mood.
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) and Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) quiet racing, circular thoughts, improving sleep issues connected to an overactive mind. Passionflower and Skullcap act synergistically, with increased effectiveness when combined.
Sweet Rose (Rose spp.) offers protection and comfort during times of emotional vulnerability, soothing grief and sadness and lifting the heart out of feelings of heaviness.
As an adaptogen, sacred Tulsi (Ocimum spp.) helps us handle stress more effectively. Tulsi relaxes anxiety, tension, and stagnation; boosts the mood; and helps us clear old pathways to create effective lifestyle changes.
Grounding Wood Betony (Stachys officinalis) is beneficial for anxiety and restlessness, bringing us down from the mind and allowing us to reconnect with the body.
